Meet "Robby," the Autonomous Audi

Audi hopes that by developing self-driving cars like "Robby" they will ultimately make driving safer. The thought of a car that controls itself, however, doesn't necessarily feel safer to drivers who are used to traditional driving. Audi's take is that even with cars that can drive themselves, the driver's still in charge.

Dino Grandoni writes in The New York Times: "Audi’s cars are far from being completely autonomous, Audi engineers say. They are 'piloted' by the driver, language borrowed from aviation that is meant to imply that the person sitting in the driver’s seat is still ultimately in control."
